چکیده

This paper describes a project currently in progress at the University of Southern California’s Institute for Creative Technologies (ICT). Much of the research at ICT involves developing better graphics, sound and artificial intelligence to be used in creating the next generation of training tools for the United States Army. Our project focuses on the use of emotional responses as an enhancement for training. Research indicates that an emotional connection is a strong factor in how and what we remember. In addition, real world situations often evoke surprising and significant emotional reactions that soldiers must deal with. Few current immersive training scenarios, however, focus on the emotional state of the trainee, limiting training scenarios to basic objective elements. The Sensory Environments Evaluation (SEE) Project at ICT is investigating the potential of emotionally compelling environments for more effective training. We do this by skillfully combining the sensory inputs available in virtual environments. Our current efforts concentrate on sight and sound; smell will be included as scent delivery methods improve. Evaluation studies are planned to determine the effectiveness of the techniques we are developing.

Neuroticism is associated with larger and more prolonged electrodermal responses to emotionally evocative pictures.

Elevated neuroticism is associated with increased psychological reactivity to stressors. Research on individual differences and physiological reactivity (e.g., electrodermal activity), however, has focused on clinical samples and measures of basal activity (e.g., nonspecific skin conductance responses) or responses to nonaffective stimuli. Surprisingly, there is a dearth of work on physiologica...

Human Emotional State and its Relevance for Military VR Training

Combat environments by their nature can produce a dramatic range of emotional responses in military personnel. When immersed in the emotional “fog of war”, the potential exists for optimal human decision-making and performance of goal-directed activities to be seriously compromised. This may be especially true when combat training is conducted under conditions that lack emotional engagement by ...

Short-term pain for long-term gain: the role of experiential avoidance in the relation between anxiety sensitivity and emotional distress.

Research has provided evidence of an interactive effect between anxiety sensitivity (AS) and experiential avoidance (EA) in predicting both anxiety and posttraumatic stress (PTS) symptomatology. Additionally, theory suggests that EA alleviates distress in the short-term, but exacerbates it in the long-term. The present cross-sectional study was developed to replicate the noted findings and exam...

Does Chronic Tinnitus Alter the Emotional Response Function of the Amygdala?: A Sound-Evoked fMRI Study

Tinnitus is often associated with strong negative thoughts and emotions which can contribute to a distressing and chronic long-term condition. The amygdala, the "feeling and reacting" part of the brain, may play a key role in this process. Although implicated in several theoretical models of tinnitus, quantification of activity in the human amygdala has only been made possible more recently thr...

Manipulation of frontal EEG asymmetry through biofeedback alters self-reported emotional responses and facial EMG.

Individual differences in resting asymmetrical frontal brain activity have been found to predict subsequent emotional responses. The question of whether frontal brain asymmetry can cause emotional responses has yet to be addressed. Biofeedback training designed to alter the asymmetry of frontal brain activity was therefore examined. Eighteen right-handed female participants were randomly assign...
